CHAPTER 27
After my visit with Tom, I sped back to Cloudcroft as fast as the curvy road would allow. I slowed down at the Village limit and drove straight to the shop adjoinng the Teen Center. There I stopped long enough to see Ryan. He assured me he'd find a ride back to The Lodge with one of the volunteers.
Next I zipped into the Teen Center and waved at Stephania, who was on duty for the day. I found Dot, Wilma, and Phyllis in their usual spot, this time playing a game of Clue.
"I'm sorry to interrupt," I said, "but I need to talk with Dot a minute, and I have to be someplace else pretty soon. Dot can tell you all about it later."
"It's about talking to the sheriff, isn't it," Wilma said, studying me through her Coke-bottle lenses.
"Yes, it is."
"Does he want to talk to all of us?"
"Maybe. Probably. Now that things are changed."
"Now that Kezzie's dead, you mean."
"Yes."
"Quit bugging her," Dot said, rising languidly and moving away from their table. "She said she was in a hurry, so y'all can ask her questions later."
"It's really not all that secret," I said as we walked toward the vending machine, "but it might be easier to discuss by ourselves."
Dot put some coins in the machine and pulled out a bottle of orange juice. "So?"
"If you're not busy tomorrow after school, we can meet with Sgt. Alderete then."
Dot gave me a considering look. "Okay."
"Good. I'll let him know. Now, where would you like to meet? Here? At your house? Someplace else?"
"Hmph. I just supposed we'd go to his office."
"That's fine by me. Is that what you'd like to do?"
She took a swig of her juice. "Yeah."
"Make sure it's okay with your mom and call me back. If I don't answer, leave a message. Sorry to sound so rushed, but I'm supposed to be in a meeting and I might have my phone turned off."
She shrugged and brushed her hair out of her face. "Mom won't mind."
"Best to let her know anyway. I'll call you back as soon as I can." I gave her a bright smile and a pat on the arm before hurrying on my way.
I gave Tom a quick call to tell him to expect Dot and me "sometime" tomorrow, and I'd fill him in later. By then, I had about ten minutes to get to the symposium.
